Shadowed Streets
Brief
"The Shadowed Streets" is a chilling supernatural mystery where players embody a deceased private investigator navigating an abandoned industrial complex. As the Main Programmer and Visual Design Director, the goal was to leverage Unreal Engine’s advanced lighting and post-processing suites to create a "ghost-detective" experience. The project focuses on atmospheric storytelling, where light is not just a visual tool but a core gameplay mechanic used to uncover hidden truths and free lost souls.

The Process
Phase 1: Blueprint Architecture & Light Mechanics The development began with defining the "Ghost Detective" loop within Unreal Engine. Using Blueprint visual scripting, I architected the core light-interaction systems and supernatural puzzle logic. This involved creating dynamic triggers that react to the player's light powers, allowing for a seamless transition between exploration and environmental problem-solving.

Phase 2: World Building & Atmospheric Lighting To establish the haunting industrial tone, I directed the level design of the abandoned factory. A primary focus was placed on Visual Punctuation—using high-contrast lighting and volumetric fog to guide the player’s eye through desaturated spaces. By mastering Unreal’s post-processing tools, I ensured the eerie ambiance remained consistent while highlighting key interactive elements through subtle light shifts.

Phase 3: 3D Asset Pipeline & Character Integration The visual identity was reinforced through a custom 3D pipeline. I managed the modelling and texturing for both the environment and the protagonist, ensuring the "hand-drawn" quality of initial concept sketches was translated into the 3D space. This involved creating detailed texture maps for industrial assets to evoke a sense of decay and history within the factory walls.
Phase 4: Cinematic Pacing & Performance The final phase involved synchronising character animations with environmental storytelling. I refined the lighting and camera work to enhance the emotional resonance of the protagonist’s journey, ensuring every frame supported the narrative of mystery and redemption. Rigorous profiling was conducted within Unreal to maintain high visual fidelity while ensuring stable frame rates across complex, shadow-heavy environments.
The Results
The project resulted in a deeply immersive interactive experience that showcases a high level of technical and artistic oversight. By bridging the gap between Blueprint programming and cinematic lighting design, I delivered a polished Unreal Engine title that demonstrates a proven ability to craft emotionally resonant, suspenseful worlds. The final prototype effectively uses light-based mechanics to drive both gameplay and narrative, resulting in a cohesive thriller aesthetic.
